Agree? Yes.
I work for an City-based (i.e City of London) IT company that 20 months ago numbered about 280 employees. Today it numbers under 60. Most of the people that got laid off have experienced exactly the same feedback as you have mentioned: too expensive, overqualified.
It's an employer's market at the moment.
