Hey everyone, got a few used routers today for my home lab to practice for my CCNA exam. Currently running a burn-in test. So far everything is looking good except one problem. One of the routers, when I connect myself to the console and boot it up, I can see the POST happening and all that other good stuff until I get to the point where it asks to press y or n to get into the setup. When I press any key, nothing happens. It just seems to freeze. I am using VanDyke software's CRT emulator. I use CRT for all my other network associate related functions and have all settings correct i.e. Baud Rate 9600, Data bits 8, Partiy NONE, Stop bits 1. What could the problem be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to mention here it's a Cisco 2500 Series router.

Sounds like the CPU or DRAM. Can you exchange it? Hell, they're so cheap on Ebay, you could pick up a 2500 series for $20-$25...

Try another terminal. I keep SecureCRT, Putty, TeraTerm Pro, and Hyperterminal Private Edition. Sometimes another terminal will work.

Also, there may be something in the bootvariables that changes the baud from 9600 to some other speed (most often 115200 for XMODEM upload). Disconnect the terminal, change the speed, then reconnect and see if you can get access.

Another option is use the AUX port to get to user exec. Unfortunately, you can't get to privileged exec until you set the enable password.

I would not recommend 2500s for CCNA practice anymore. Get 2600XMs minimum with the most current IOS so you can configure all the CCNA features and even CCNP features when you go down that track.

You can load the router while plugged into the console port, and get all the way up to when it asks you if you want to go into setup---then plug into the AUX and answer "no", and see if you get

router>

Then type

router>en

If you then get "no password set"

you know that the router is good, except for something with the console port.

I would then reload the router with the cable plugged into the console port, and try to answer "yes" instead of "no", see what happens.

Before all of this, I would try Cluebird's suggestion of a different emulator...

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. Thanks Cluebird, I used a different emulator and it worked. I was also able to salvage a couple of used 1711s and an 1811 from my office pool. Might not have to use the 2600s afterall but I just wanted to get the feel of the serial ports as I've read about them a lot but never actually worked on one.

Cheers~
