HI,

From London and have got a DNS server and a couple of others i have just bought. I am currently on AOL but they only offer dynamic IP's.

What is the best ISP to use? I cant use NTL cause im not in the area.

Does one really need a static IP in order to run servers continuously? I have one DNS server and one holding server for my sites.

I suppose what i am getting at is, is it possible to get round this somehow? I have been told that i need a static ip in order for everything to connect and run my sites with the DNS server, is this true?

If it is true, whats the best ISP to go for? Other than NTL.

Thanks!!!

I am not certain of the underlying issue, here:

. If you need a public presence on the internet for your dynamic IP web servers, ftp servers, etc. do a Google search for "dyndns"

. Your LAN or intranet DNS server should never have your ISP DNS servers, other than in a lookup or forwarding zone.

In Short:

I have aquired a dell server and a computer with a DNS server software built in to control everything.

At the moment i connect through AOL which only has dynamic IP. With this i cant get online through anything else other than the computer its connected through.

In order to connect everything and broadcast my websites i need a static ip? Or does it not matter because as they will be online 24/7 the dynamic IP wont change?

Sorry for not explaining myself before!! Thanks.

You can use a dynamic IP and make it appear "static" to others by registering with a dynamic dns service. There are many free ones. You install a client that updates the entries at the service level, and provide this DNS address to others.

There are others. Google on "dynamic dns"

Ah so they give me a program that i download and then that runs as a static?

Does that mean i dont have to change my broadband from AOL? Does having my own DNS server confuse the situation slightly or does it not matter?

Would it be best just to change ISP and get a static or does this work well whatever ISP your using?

Thanks very much.

just been on noip website and it says:

"No-IP Free offers an easier way for others to locate you on the Internet. If you want to serve web pages, share MP3s, host Quake, or run any kind of Internet server, you need a name so your users can find you. It's simple. You choose a name for your computer and we tell the world where your computer is located. Even better, we also provide you with a program that notifies us whenever your computer's IP address changes. Instead of being just a number on the Internet, your server is now always available by the same easy-to-remember name. "

This provides you with a DNS server. As I have my own DNS server, do i just get their program and then configure this to my DNS server (Using simple DNS plus)?

Thanks

You can use both DNS. The DNS supplied by No-IP will allow the "world" to locate your server through a easy to remember url like it says. For No-IP to be notified of a change in your IP, you must install a small client utility that will constantly compare your current IP with a previous one recorded earlier. If the two IPs differ, then a notification is automatically sent to No-IPs DNS server with your new IP. Your own personal DNS will fulfill DNS requests from your internal lan. If your internal DNS is unable to fulfill the request, then it will forward it to your ISPs (AOL I guess) DNS. To do so, you would have to put your ISPs DNS servers in your forwarders. There are basically 3 levels of DNSes in your situation. If you don't have an internal lan connected to your Dell server, I don't think you need an internal DNS unless you also use the Dell server to browse the net or have other functions that require DNS.
