Does the CCNA test have any sim questions for ISDN? Will I be wasting my money on getting routers with bri int and isdn sim. I already have 2 2501 and 1 2600 router. Thanks

Kryolla,
CCNA does cover ISDN, so you can expect several questions in the mix. I know I had a handfull and they were not ones that I sweated over !!

I have read a lot of posts - have never seen anything on an ISDN sim ....... does not mean Cisco could not put one in next week.

As for an ISDN hardware sim - you are looking at dropping from $350 to $850 for one on Ebay. You also would need a Cisco 2503(or others) and an ISDN wic for the 2600.

If you are moving onto CCNP (after CCNA) or places you want to work for in area still use ISDN it might be worth the investment. I do not think so just for the CCNA exam.

You might check with Cisco Press/Boson as to how the CCNA Sim they sell handles ISDN. I have never thought to check that aspect out - it is a very good sim.

I hope this helps !!

Kryolla,

I posted this earlier for someone else who was worried about ISDN - this is a GREAT website I send my students to all the time -
RouterGod - The online news magazine for Cisco Professionals...

They have "tongue-in-cheek" "interviews" with celbs about Cisco routers and switches - very funny in a geek way but the information to right on.

Makes it a little easier to study some of this stuff!!!

2 "interviews" about ISDN -

A RouterGod Exclusive! - Alicia Silverstone Discusses Basic ISDN

and

Gunney Sgt. Hartman at CCNA Boot Camp - ISDN Reference Points

I hope this helps!!

Thanks I just wasnt sure how to approach this portion of the CCNA. I will read up on ISDN but I dont think I will invest any money on getting a sim. I also read that website good stuff. Thanks again

I saw an ISDN simulator - sold out of UK in last two weeks [24/2/2005] for $275AUD thats like $220USD on ebay - I spoke with the seller via email as I was tossing up whether to get one or not. They ship globally and work everywhere - well here at least - so imagine that they are power supply intelligent and run on the whole range and like all computer equip you plug in a power cable for your country and away you go. Search for ISDN, worldwide.

Breazy,

Here is the ad from Ebay - $235.00 and $12 to ship.

Some others were selling things like this for $350 last year.

I have never used this unit - here is the info for anyone that wants to look into it - I just did a search on Ebay for "ISDN simulator".

---------------------------------------------------------

Whats Included:
1 x PBX
1 x AC adapter 230V (Europe, Australia).
The PBX had been use world wide no problem. (feedbacks from users in USA,Australia,Japan )

Technical detail about the pbx :
2 x isdn bri (isdn bus) like any isdn simimulator (like B-2link, Teltone, Vconsole),each isdn bri/bus have 2 S/T interface, 1 have RJ-45. Support Basic-net3 that is using in Europe and Australia.
Support ST interface (ST int is also use in Europe )
Cisco 2503 router is with isdn ST int,
1600,1700, 2600,3600,4000 series also ok but make sure you routers have ST int.
Users in USA and Canada need to buy a voltage converter from 230V to 110V (very cheap from 5-10 USD)

If anyone has used one of these please report!!

Hello all, I have actually purchased the ISDN simulator you are talking about, off of eBay. It's manufactured by Deutsche Telekom. I paid $250 (with shipping). There are two sellers (on eBay) of this particular unit. Just for the record, I purchased it from itex (eBay handle).

You will have to get a step up transformer if you want to use it in the U.S. as it runs on 220-230VAC. I purchased mine from eBay as well, it's a Trisonic Step Up&Down unit rated at 100W. The seller suggested I buy at least a 50W for continuous use. Don't get a travel transformer, as they are for temporary use only.

The unit doesn't use SPIDs, remember this was for use in Europe. The seller sends different router configurations for you to test it out on.

Please remember, it works only with S/T interfaces not U interfaces. As CiscoGuy33 already mentioned, it will work with the 2503s. I am using two 2520s for my home lab.

Hope this helps. If I can answer any other questions about it for you, just let me know.

Regards

Mark

Hi I am from the UK and I decided to buy one of these. It isn't as advanced as the likes of a VConsole etc but for the price is not bad. I got one shipped over to the UK total cost was £123. He provides plenty of configs for you to try out.
