I have an ISA 2000 server which is blocking outbound SMTP requests. When I check the logfile I am told that the SMTP request is being blocked for the external IP address of the ISA server for port 25.
In order to allow SMTP outbound, i assume you have created an access rule which allows for SMTP outbound, without any kind of restrictions (limited to a set of users for example)? If you limit to users/groups, you need to use the firewall client, because authentification is not possible else.
How's the ip configuration of the ISA Server? Does the ISA Server have two or more NICs? How's the routing table of the ISA Server look like?
