Hello people

I noticed that whenever I install any programs (I'm System Admin) It also installs the icons and access to all other users on the system.

Microsoft Vista suppport said that unless the program itself offers to install for one user it will default to all users.

They said thats how professional operating systems work these days ?

Their advice was I could always logon as each user and then delete each icon that I didn't want them to have.

Doesn't sound very professional to me?

Please tell me this is not true!!!!!

I had the Windows Media Center on a gateway computer 32-bit 3.0 gig processor and 2 megs of ram

I installed the Windows Vista Ultimat, clean install not the upgrade

Thank you
Myrna

This is related to how the software that you're installing behaves, not Vista. This behavior has been true with multi-user operating systems including XP & Windows 2000. Some software will install only for the logged in user, some will install for all users, some will ask which way you want.

Hi SMAH

Thanks for your quick response to my query.

I can't help but catch my breath on that one. Not to mention my disappointment.

Maybe the vista engineers can create a script to automataclly log into each user and delete the marked icons.

If the program that your installing can control who see's the program on their desktop then what's so hard about the Operating System doing it.

I just don't see what the advantage is letting everybody on the system have access to every program that is installed.

Anyway

Thanks

Myrna

There could certainly be arguments both ways, but I don't really see this as the operating system's responsibility. For example let's talk about some basic word processing program. Administrative user A installs word processor program that installs with all user configuration. Now all local users can use that program with no licensing related issues. Expanding this scenario, what if this word processing program is now customized for the environment - a network path to a template folder, integration with some other program already on the machine, etc. After the customization, all other local users can immedidiately use this as intended. If there were 100 local users, would it be convienient to do the exact same installation & make these exact same configuration changes 100 times? Now if another user is added at some later time, again, the word processor program will immediately work; no need to go back and install & customize for the 101st time.

I realize that this is a bit of an oversimplification to make a point, and that a similar argument could be made from the other point of view. But if the particular software doesn't present the option, the OS has to decide one way or the other and this way probably causes less agrevation for 'most' normal users.

Even when you use an administrator account, User Account Control provides heightened security. By default, most programs run with the permissions of a standard user, which limits the potential damage they (or malware acting through those programs) can do".

Hi Linney

Many years ago a client I was programming for purchased an Multi User operating system called "Oasis OS" for the day it was waaaaaay beyond it's time. It was delivered on 8" diskettes. lol

The users in the clients company were assingnd to a group and when software was installed the users would recieve access through the groups.

But thanks for thoes links, and I'll be looking into it when things slow down for me here

Thanks again
