Hi all.

Without getting into all the details, I have queries that will return large amounts of data from a DB (300,000 rows). I would like present the data using IE and HTLM in a single page. So the user can page through the data, instead of requiring for the next block of data in the result set. My developer tells me this is unreasonable.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all. Thanks to everyone for your input.

To answer the question of why would you return so many records?
My user's (6 of them) are researching/investigating the market data for an entire day for stocks being traded. Depending on the active of the stock being researched, thousands of records can be returned. This information can not be filtered because a piece of information standing alone (filtered for) may seem OK and meaningless. However, that same piece of information in the context of all the other data will show a problem.

Wouldn't be more effective to work on the sophistication of the filters?
How can someone sift 300,000 records by eye like that?
Perhaps it's my non-understanding of the market but it seems like an almost impossible task and something that a computer would be ideal for!

Can we clarify - are you talking about queries which will return 300,000 rows, or are they queries returning "thousands of rows" from a database of 300,000?

Either way, I agree with Foamcow - your users are unlikely to spot anything if you just give them a mountain of data to sift through by eye. You need to give them criteria with which to narrow down the search to something more manageable.
