Is there any way to safeguard icon positioning on the desktop? 1

I use a 3 monitor setup at work. I keep groups of icons on each of the three screens, corresponding with the different tasks I have to keep up with. Unfortunately, every time desktop is resized, the icon positions are changed and remain so. This is bad enough on my laptop when swapping between native resolution and 800x600 to use a projector; on my desktop, it leaves me with a hopeless mess. If I remote into the machine, the icons from all three screens are jammed into the primary monitor. I'm left with the task of manually rearranging everything.

Is there any way to prevent this or am I just sunk?

There is a LAYOUT.DLL and LAYOUT.REG file that were originally available in the Windows Resource Kits from Microsoft. You can download them from the link below. Just save the file to your desktop. Next you will want to open up the folder and drag the LAYOUT.DLL file to you C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Then double-click on the iconlayout.vbs file and click Open. You will then get a message saying that the Save and Restore feature was added to the context menu. Now when you right click on the desktop you will have two new options on the context menu 'Save Desktop Icon Layout' and 'Restore Desktop Icon Layout'.
