Hi,

I am a new to this BO tool. I have worked on Oracle Express earlier.

As other tools have Metadata, do we have a Metadata database in BO. If yes, where is it(location and when its created). Is there any intermediate database created for Cubes to access by BO. If yes, where are these located.

Thanks

Hi

Business objects has Universe which is the layer between the Metadata and User.

Here Metadata called Repository. This repository is optional. If you want a secure environment ( and +)you need to create a repository. Repository stores security details(user, usergroup, permission and privileges..) and universe details and what are the reports are available. It will not store data mappin. It will be stored in Universe

That is why BO is called HOLAP (Hybrid OLAP)

isnt the metadata layer the UNIVERSE in Business Objects. The repository only stores the metdata as a central storage so as to be able to provide security settings and user privilege rights.

And i always thought BO was more of ROLAP then HOLAP. Beacuse of the relations that we define in the designer for the tables in the database. Also, for tools like Cognos where there is a strong implementation of MOLAP where cubes are created that store data, in BO there is nothing of that sort (if u can discount the metacube created at the end client) ?

Could you please clarify this for me.

Thanks in advance

BO Universe is not a semantic layer or "CUBE". If you are looking for physical MetaData Solution that can be used with BO (or indeed any OLAP or e-BI technology)- may I suggest MetaMatrix. This is a specialist 'Virtual DataMart' that stores only the MetaData (including live feed if appropriate).

BO can connect to the MetaMatrix Server and include it's repository as part of the BO Universe if required. This can provide a more flexible and faster performing solution where the use of full-blown OLAP or data-warehouse is precluded by the potential high costs involved.

Meta Matrix web site is at:

Good Luck.

BO Universe embodies business metadata. For OLAP, it makes a kind of "on-the-fly" cubes(dynamically). It doesn't store cube data as such.
