I know there are addressable cable TV jacks so I was wondering
if anyone knows of anything similar for an RJ45 outlet?
Has anyone come across this and provide me with a website
link and any opinions on the product.

Thanks
Gary

Could you clarify what you mean by addressable? I mean, are you trying to send a letter to it or something? :)

Thanks Stu for the link, it's close to what I'm looking for,
but I need a complete jack/wallplate unit. If you have seen the addressable wall jacks that cable TV use, I'm looking for something like that, but that can be configured with an IP.

If you were to clarify what it is you want, or are trying to do (e.g the application), I'm sure you'll get more responses.

If by adressable you mean remotely controllable (e.g to allow remotely enabling or disabling the jack?) then you need to be more specific. Does you want to control it using Ethernet and IP?

Since an RJ-45 could be used for any number of different applications, this clarification would help.

BTW, a quick scan of the above link looks like this may be Keystone compatible. IN that case you could pair it with anything else you like (if you cannot find Keystone F connectors try L-Com).

Please fill us in and let us know what you find.

Good luck

your looking for a rj45 with a MAC address ?

/if you post details as to the application some folke here might better be able to help

No, looks to me like he is looking for a wall jack for use in multi-unit housing or maybe hospitality installations.

We have a few of these type of buildings in our area. The management through an ISP offers internet service to each unit through an ethernet connection. Never saw an addressable jack though.

No real such thing as I know of it; try a VLAN switch with CPE's that can be managed centrally, or more intelligently, get a good managed switch (Cisco Catalyst, HP ProCurve, Netgear) and use that to manage your drop endpoints.

I know of a major connectivity manufacture that was at least researching, if not testing an active jack (I know bad term to use as I believe that's what 3Com calls their switch). But it was an individual jack that would have a MAC address and could be assigned an IP. The purpose was to use with their active infrastructure management/patch panel solution. It's been about a year since I've heard about it, and have not seen anything on it since, so it could still be in R&D or DOA. This is the only one that I know of.
