Hey all,

I'm trying to setup a computer with a second display adapter and monitor and I'm not having much luck. When I go to Device Manager the second adapter has the yellow exclamation point and on the General tab of the adapter is this message:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I've tried MS support and searching on Google but I haven't found anything yet. The adapters are both S3 cards. One AGP card and the other is a PCI card (not two PCI cards). I'm running Win2k Pro SP4. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Hi,

It sounds extremely unlikely to me that AGP will work with PCI for video.

If you look in your BIOS - does it not set the option of a choice of PCI or AGP for video?
Look in the BIOS, to be sure.

In any case, why not buy a dual output graphics card - £85-ish for an average card.

Or you may want to check the resources. If one card is using the same rescources as the other, one won't start. Since they are both S3 they may be using the same rescources, as AGB is a PCI device. Try using a cards from different manufacturers.

I am using dual monitors with 2 cards, one AGP and one PCI, the AGP is a GeForce2 and the PCI is a VooDoo3, and they work perfectly.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every moment of it.

Hi,

Thnx Kspade - AGP DOES work with PCI then - that is cleared.

Dan76, the MS article doesn't apply because the card isn't even "starting."

KSpade, here's the message on the "Resources" tab:

"This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem."

The card will work by itself, but not as a second card to the Primary card, which is the AGP card.

Darylles, the PCI/AGP option in BIOS is to set the Primary Display option. When booting should the computer use AGP as the main display or the PCI as the main display. ALSO, I don't want to buy display adapters for the people on my network that want dual displays. I have extra monitors and extra display adapters so the cost will be minimal. I think I'll hunt in back for some different display adapters and see if I get the same errors as this one.

Thanks,

Well it may not be starting because the bios is not starting it, because it may be using the same rescources as the agp. Card manufacturers tend to use similar recources for all their similar chipsets. try to see if you can find a pci or agp from a diferent manufacturer. The Bios should try to start AGP first.

Go back into your BIOS and look for "PCI VGA Palette Snoop," and if it is disabled, enable it, then restart your system. This will allow you to use more than one video card in your system (depending on the number of open PCI slots left on your MB). On AMI BIOS you usually find it in the "PCI PnP Setup, and in Award BIOS it is usually found in the "BIOS Features Setup." Also, the previous tek tip given to you is correct, in that it doesn't matter if you have both PCI and AGP running together on your system, as long as you have the resources your OK.
