Just wondering how many receptionist phones (MLX-20L with DSS) I can add to my Merlin Legend R7.1 system. Is there a maximum number?

No specific limit I am aware of - except exceeding the unit load count total for the power supply. The 20L draws a little less juice than an MLX-28D. Depending on how many DSS's you have, you may need to add individual small supplementary power supplies to some of the 20L's with DSS units.

I guess I am refering to the software limits of the system to support "operator style" phones. I thought I was told in the past there was a limit as low as 3, 4, 5, or 6, or somewhere around that. Maybe I am just dreaming, but I thought there may have been a limit.

There is a limit on official "operator" positions:

Maximum Number of Operator Positions

QCC MLX-20L = 4
DLC MLX-20L = 8
DLC MLX-28D = 8

DLC Analog multiline telephones = 8

Hope this helps

I forgot to mention that any combination of the above operator positions can be assigned as long as no more than
four are QCCs and the total combined number is no more than eight. For example, a system can have a combination that consists of four QCCs, two MLX DLCs, and two analog DLCs.

48 Total MLX-20L's - But you are shooting for total OPERATOR Positions.

Thanks tdaugurdas.

I have confirmed that I can add a few more phones just as you stated.

However, I would like to add that I have been told that the operator phones can only be added to my system on every other 4th port of my mlx cards.

They cannot just be plugged into any old port. For some reason, every 4th port is special. If this turns out not true I will add to this thread.

Yes every 4th port is "special". However, you can always renumber those ports to suit your fancy to whatever extension number you want. And, the renumber other extensions to the "every 4th port" you used.

Oh, I thought I would add...I THINK I am using the standard DLC type operator setup. (QCC does NOT allow for movable buttons, right?)

I don't even know what those DLC and QCC acronyms mean, but...

I can configure my buttons how ever I please (so as to have a movable for each incoming copper line, a movable DVM button, a movable nights button), so I assume that this means I am using a DLC setup. If I am wrong let me know, otherwise I will assume I am using DLC and we will leave it at that.

So tdaugirdas, you are saying that the PHYSICAL port location must stay in the same place, so if I already have some salesman physically plugged into one of those "special 4th" ports, I will have to physically move his wire to another port on the card to free up that physical location to be used as an operator phone, correct?

I can then renumber the extensions as I please, I understand that.

I will have to play around a little, but it will be interesting becuase I have some 8 port cards and some 16 port cards, so I am assuming that port 1, 4, 8, and 16 on each MLX-016 card are special, but I'll have to check it out. Thanks guys!

Stick with DLC (Direct Line) operator consoles. The QCC setup has many limitations. As for the ports - you are correct. Every 4th one is "special". So plug those poor sales people out - and plug them in elsewhere. You can always renumber the new port location to be the same extension number as it was originally - you may have to go through more than one renumbering to make this all work - of course - but that's the fun part.
