I recently looked at the .NET technology that MS claims to be spectacular. The simple fact of creating database web pages visually (something I've never seen in Linux) is enough to pay what they ask for the Visual Studio .NET environment.

So the question is: Is there any Linux alike for Visual Studio .NET? That lets you create web pages visually?

I will never use a visual tool to design my web pages or code php script. I prefer VI. Why do u need a component or a wizard to connect a database to a web page?

Thanks a way of programming I guess. "WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouNeed" is the best way to go I think.

Frank.

the folks who develop Nuke, PostNuke, and PHPNuke should post to this thread. Those PHP based environemnts offer a way for third parties to add modules to a web/database page which allow others to pick and choose modules that accomplish specific things on a web page.

Simple examples include things like neat clocks or calculators, more complex modules you can add are things like a Photo Gallery.

Those modules are quite impressive, with built in features for users as well as features for the admin of the site.

So I view various PHP based projects like PHP Nuke to be Open Source versions of MS.NET

For amazon.com type shopping carts, see OSCommerce

ANyone else have examples of PHP "applications"

The coolest part of PHP NUke is ability to download hundreds of "Themes" that drastically change your site look and feel with one mouse click.

Each visitor to your site can pick a different theme.

...shows off power of database.

Thank YOu Kinldy

If you need to do visual development of a db web front end, have a look at the PHAkt module for Dreamweaver. Allows for php / database integration into macromedia dreamweaver.

Thank you for all the answers, but what really captivated my attention was the visually designed web pages BUT I want to do it in Linux. I don't know of any Dreamweaver for Linux.

As for you, LinuXelite, you should rethink. VI is by far less productive than a visual editor, like Dreamweaver. I am a professional C++ coder and I also love to code, but productivity IS very important, and VI just doesn't make it to this point.

Then use bluefish or quanta.
There are plenty of very decent visual html editors
for linux. Bluefish IMO is the best.
The MS .net alike thing is not really a valid specification
when you are looking for an html editor.
If you want .net use .net or take a look at mono.

Hi,

When you were talking about .net I thought you were refering to the server side of the interation of the server backend to the client.

For client side, there are very good equivalents in java development environments and I understand kylix integrates with web server for services development.
