Is there a limit to the number of posts to a Frontpage message board?

I've been running several message boards created with Microsoft Frontpage. They work fine for the limited use they're put to, but all the boards simply blow up periodically. Someone posts a message and instantly the board is just blown away. I can easily repost a new board, but all the old messages are lost, which is very annoying to everyone, as there is no way to recreate the board from the old messages.

A quick Google search turned up nothing. Either I'm the only person on the planet using Frontpage message boards, or no one else is having the problem?

The boards are on different ISP's servers, all running with Frontpage extensions. I'm using FP 2002.

Here's a link to one I just reposted. I guess maybe I should have left the corrupt one up.-

FultonComputer,

No you aren't the only one using the FP message board. I have only played with it myself, never actually put one into public use.

It isn't exactly clear to me if you are referring to the Discussion Web Wizard or the Guestbook.

I have seen posts in the past where users have had difficulty after 100 posts with the Discussion Web and also users reporting problems after a certain number of entries in the Guestbook. I can't say how common of a problem that is however.

One way to safe guard your info with Guestbook is to have the info posted to email as a backup. You might also try placing a backup in the _private folder via the optional second file if that is available.

Neither the Guestbook or Discussion Web should wipe out the previous data when full, howevcer, I would think they would simply stop new posts.

planetant,

If you are talking about a forum with FrontPage, once you have an open web, you would go to File >> New >> Web and choose the Dissussion Web Wizard. Follow the wizard to set it up.

Remember, with any prefabricated FrontPage form, be cafeful not to change the default settings unless you are sure of the result.

Hope I have been of some help,

Whew! I'm glad I'm not the only one.

It's the discussion web, not the guestbook. I was running three boards, and all three blew up periodically. I could get many more than 100 posts, probably more on the order of several hundred on one of them. Others were closer to the 100 you mentioned.

Microsoft's FrontPage is a decent product. It's too bad their programmers couldn't fix something as basic as this.

One of the boards I eliminated, one I switched to WebBBS (a great product), and the other is still a FrontPage discussion board. I'm going to keep looking for a solution, but it appears that there aren't too many FrontPage discussion groups around.

Thanks! So you need FP Server extensions. But I also heard that if you have WSS running the message board can run as well.

Is this working for everyone - what do most people have supporting their boards and/ or searches?

FultonComputer,

Actually, there are a number of FP groups around. I don't think it would be appropriate for me to post them here, but I do have a list of FrontPage resources in my site menu.

I have been having a problem with viewing the contents in a FrontPage discussion board that I added to an existing website. I posted a message to test it, but could not see the message in the contents frame, even after refreshing the browser. The search feature immediately recognizes the posted thread, however.

I thought it might be a hidden folder problem (caused by the "_foldername"), but it did not work after removing the underscore. Any help would be appreciated...it's frustrating to have a discussion board and none of the contents are listed!

Hi rankandfile,

Keep in mind, that these FrontPage message boards and Guestbooks are prefab designed. If you inspect the form properties you will see the default settings for them. Making changes to these default settings, will frequently disable what might have been a working form.

Also, since they are forms, they follow the following rules:

1. The FrontPage Server Extensions must be enabled on the server.

2. You must publish with FrontPage to http location. Don't use FTP as this can break or corrupt the extensions.

3. Use of .htm or .html page extension.

Additionally, in order to send results to email, the SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) must be set up on the server to send form mail.

Hope I have been of some help,
Micheal Smith

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary in terms of prefab, or going by the steps of the wizard. I simply inserted the discussion board into my existing site and then created a link to the discussion board welcome page. You can check it out at:
Frontpage extensions are installed on my webhosts (Winsave) server, and I am able to receive form mail from other feedback forms within the website. Could it be that Winsave doesn't support discussion boards? I.e., they do not make visible recently posted threads. If this is the case, how is it that I am able to see/get to the newly posted contents via search?

Well, I just did a Test Submit and was able to find it with the search function. Like you said, nothing is showing in the contents frame. Honestly, I have never attempted to use the Discussion Web, but I have looked at a few and the contents did indeed show up.

Since the Post function is working, it appears the extensions are working for the DWeb. You haven't changed the defaults as far as I can tell.

You might want to try deleting this and starting over with a new one. Try setting it up without frames, to see if this makes a difference.

Hope I have been of some help,
Micheal Smith
