I am going to set up a PC network with Win98 SE to my neighbor's house, he has Win98 also. He lives two houses down. We are going to string the CAT 5 cable, from PC to PC. Is there a distance factor, which might degrade the signal/performance?
Are there any other factors which might come into play? I have a Netgear RT311 DSL Router and a Netgear EN104 4-port hub.

I think some of these wireless routers have a lot larger range. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I always wondered if you could network along the power lines. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Somewhere, recently, I ran across a description of powerline networking. It probably has the same problems that powerline phone sharing and home controls have. You can share on the secondary side of the transformers, but it won't get thru to the primary side. Ed Fair

EBGB it just so happens, here at my job a cabling company was doing a job the other day and I had in mind a similar idea. I asked the guy if I could run CAT5 from the upstairs to downstairs outside the windows he strongly suggested not too unless I used some PVC which is a covering for it because as davegotech said it could very likely get zapped in a storm.

PVC won't shield it. You would need metallic conduit, and then you would need a ground wire, and then you would have a target.
Probably won't hurt to run it outside. Just will deteriorate faster from the UV. Ed Fair

Maybe someone mentioned this already I didn't read every post. You can by cat5 cable designed for outdoor use!
