Is there a big difference between Visual Studio.Net 2002 and Visual Studio.Net 2003? How about between 2003 and 2005? Where can I get Visual Studio.Net cheap? Please advise, thanks!

I don't know of much diff between 2002 and 2003. There are some upgrades to the framework(1.0 to 1.1). VS2005 offers much more in the way of development(framwork v2.0). You cannot use the 1.1 famework with vs2005. If you are moving to a version of vs, go for 2005. It is the latest and greatest and as microsoft always does, is to stop support for older verisons at sometime.
As for pricing, you will have to shop around. It all depends on the level of vs you want, professional, architect etc. You can go to microsoft.com to find out the differences in the versions. I belive there are 4 versions.

I didn't see much difference between 2002 and 2003. 2005 was a big step though. Many more controls available and provide much faster development with a lot less code.

Are you looking to develop commercially or are you a student looking to learn?

If you are a student check out the academic licencing schemes available through MS.

If you are a developer - hands in your pockets, buddy - you're paying ;)

At this stage it does you no good to go out and buy a version of visual studio, at least in my opinion, for someone who is just starting to learn this stuff.

As far as dropping support for prior versions, has Microsoft dropped support for Visual Basic 6? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think they have and it's been out since 1999. Microsoft still supports Access 97 and look how long that has been around.

I don't see Microsoft dumping .NET 1.1 anytime in the near future.

Microsoft will try to convince you that you can't create a modern application without the latest greatest version, which is a crock of....Which of course is an advertising gimmick design to sell product.

That being said, .NET 2.0 offers some advantages over prior versions of .NET.

I suggest you try out the free downloadable versions...they work just fine.

I stand corrected, Microsoft supposedly stopped maintstream support for VB6 on March 31, 2005. But what does that really mean? Plenty of projects are still being developed in VB6. Does it mean Microsoft will tell you to blow if you call their tech support? But let's be real, how many of us call Microsoft for tech support? Normally we just come here, use the knowledge base, etc.

But you were looking for a cheap version of visual studio.net. I think downloading the visual studio express editions of the software is as cheap as it's going to get, and it's free!

The more I use it, the more I love it. The WebDeveloper version is not language specific, you can create projects in C#,VB.NET and I believe J#. This is only for web applications. For windows applications you must use language-specific versions. There is C# 2005 Express and VB.NET 2005 Express. And if you need a database to play with, there is SQL Server 2005 Express.
