The 501 runs exactly the same code as the other PIX Firewalls so all the features (except failover) are there. If it's just for studying then it will be perfect. The PIX 501 & 506 can't however run the latest code (Version 7.x) due to memory requirements, there was talk of version 7.x being available for these later in the year but nothing has appeared yet.
If you're studying for the 642-522 SNPA "Securing Networks with PIX and ASA" Exam, you'll need to get a minimum of a PIX 515 with 128mb of RAM. The new exam is based off of the PIX/ASA 7.x OS.
You can still learn a ton with the 501 running 6.3(5) but not all that you'll need to pass the new 642-522 exam.
