We have an exchange server that allows folks on the road to access their emails via POP3.

Everything works fine ... but I am curious:

1. Is the password send over the net in clear text format ?

2. What does it take to improve the security of such a connection ?

Make sure your Mail server is behind a Firewall and that your ntfs permissions are setup correctly.
I would also suggest that you force your users to change their passwords on a regular basis and keep the password to a min of 6 characters. Also set your system up to remeber the last 6 passwords used.

Hope this helps

I would like to know the answers to the specific questions I posed on my original question. Thanks.

It depends on your settings and normally it is in clear text.
