Is the NET server only available on a 64 bit platform?

.net (or Windows 2003 as its been renamed) is a 32-bit server system. They will be realeasing a 64-bit version in time for when AMD bring their Hammer chip out..... Scotsdude[bravo]

Cool stuff but the only thing is that nor the 32 bit or the 64 bit works from Microsoft side so it really doesent matter does it.??

dude,

you need the 64-bit software to take advantage of the 64-bit chip architecture, or there's no point. All software and drivers are rewritten for 64-bit CPUs, although AMD's chip will be able to handle 32 or 64, while Intel are gonna have 2 seperate chips....

Just an update to this- Microsoft have said theyre bringing out 64bit versions of Win2k3 for Itanium and Itanium2 - they have no official plans for a Hammer/Opteron version.. :(

dogers - fair point, but note they said no "offical" plans.....it'll appear....microsoft are touchy about anything related to possible market monopoly at the mo, so if they release it on Itanium only, then they'll be heavily accused of siding with intel.... Scotsdude[bravo]

Actually, there will be a version for the Opteron/Hammer CPU's, just not in time for the launch, possibly late 2003 or before mid 2004. More info in the old news section at winxp.bink.nu

Just to affirm: (From winxp.bink.nu)

Microsoft Corp. this Friday announced it has released Windows Server 2003 to manufacturing alongwith Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 for Intel Itanium 2 processor. Even before the release of Windows Server 2003, people were curious and asking whether Microsoft is interested in releasing a Server 2003 version for AMD-64 or not.
Well ... here we have found some evidence which shows that they do plan to support AMD64 when it comes out. Though a bit late for them. But considering AMDs slow release, its not yet too late.

The Windows Server 2003 is 32-Bit, but the Enterprise Edition and the DataCenter-Edition is available with 64-Bit.

Only Intel Itanium-based computers.

If there is a need and you have enough MONEY you can get 64-Bit support ...

as we said above Hithlum, there will be a version for AMD's Opteron, and in fact I'm sure I saw a news story which had a pre-release version running, some sort of of MS/AMD demo........
