I originally had this problem "I bought a new computer in component form (an abit raid MB, an XP1700+ CPU, 2 x 256mb ddrram) and put it together (i have done this lots of times)when i started up the computer i got no video yet i also got no beeps or anything else apart from the drives and fans all starting up.Another strange thing is to turn the computer off i have to gold the power button down for 5 seconds, the motherboard is one i have used before and is a straight press once to turn off normally."
To try to fault find and see if it was a dodgy motherbord i took the memory and cpu home to tyr there and as soon as i put the memory chips 2x 256mb DDR chips in my computer it did the same thing to my motherboard. Now even putting the old memory back in i can no longer get video and my computer too has changed from 1 push of the power switch to having to press and hold to turn it off

Aye holding down the power button is quite normal nowadays, and a good feature too - you can normally configure it on the Power setting though.

Sounds to me like if there are no bleeps its possibly a CPU issue ?

thing is until i put the suspect memory in it only was a press once to turn off outside of windows. the cpu is fine cause i have had it working in a different computer

I am also had this problem I use ASUS P3B-F and PIII 550. when i started up the computer i got no video yet but the speaker sound "bee bu bee bu ....." continuously and fans all starting up.
I replaced all ram and video card but it cannot solve the problem.

Anyone can help me??

Thanks

Let me get this right. You tried placing the "test" components into a known working machine. The known working machine didn't work with the questionable components. Now the known working machine won't even work with it's own original components? Did you try clearing CMOS with the jumper? Let me know what you get after you have done this. Jay [infinity]

i have done the cmos jumper with no effect at all . i am now wondering if a track on my board is burnt out say one to do with the video card

Do you see any burn tracks, etc.? Have you tried a different Vid card? Jay [infinity]

yeah have tried a different card same result and the card from the machine in a different comp and it works fine.
couldn't see any burnt tracks but there was a slight burning smell when i first started up the comp with the suspect memory

That doesn't sound good. Can you still smell a little bit of the burnt stuff on the board when it's off? If so, I'm afraid the worst has happened. Likely a path from CPU to Memory, CPU to Video Card, or Memory to Video is slightly crispy. Jay [infinity]

that is what i dreaded from the start cant really smell burning anymore it happened on saturday though

Sounds to me like you cracked your cpu core. No beeps, no video, but you have power and it's not the video card. When you set the heatsink on did you tilt it, clip one side, then let it fall back to flat and clip the other side? That's an easy way to crack the core. The heatsink must be set on flat, clipped, and only have pressure applied on the clip. If it wasn't that I'd suggest looking for burn marks around the edges and top of the cpu. You may have not had good/any contact with the heatsink. The reason I suspect the CPU is because I cracked mine about 2 weeks ago. I accidentally set the heatsink on sideways. Learned my lesson. One last thing to check is to make sure the orientation is right. If you put the heatsink on turned 180 degrees it will fit but barely any part of it will touch the cpu.

I suppose it's possible you fried the cpu itself, but you tried another cpu already didn't you? Jay [infinity]

yeah tried a new one same effect also tested the other cpu in another machine worked fine

Jumpers or dip switches? Sorry, missed the part about him trying a different cpu :)

Let it go man, let it go...we did all we could do. We'll miss the little guy.[cry]...
But hey, could use the upgrade anyway, right? Kinda sucks, but that's the only positive side of it. Jay [infinity]

This persistent beeping is either memory or the video card normally. Check your jumpers and reseat cards. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

You could try swapping for known good memory, but you have probably already tried that as well. You tried using all the original components at the same time, right? Jay [infinity]
