To restore an item directly from tape backup to the server that I have Commvault running on? I DRed my Commvault server in a lab for testing purposes and would like to restore a file from tape but since I don't have all servers in my lab available I would like to restore the file locally.

Yes it is posible, if you have perfomed a DR restore of your commserve, now you will need to configure the file system ida, and a media agent. Then you will be able to perform a out of place restore to the file system ida localy installed on the server. During the restore make sure that you manually point to the media agent in your DR enviornment.
