Is it possible to upgrade E5.5 to E2K WITHOUT ad?

Is it possible to upgrade E5.5 to E2K (to take advantage of new mapi api version) WITHOUT active directory?
rumour has it there is a way... but I'm not so sure... never seen it written anywhere

Anyone shed any light? Having MAJOR problems now with AV software which can't wait for our planned migration to E2K3
