Hi, I am installing a new system with different servers and software and the customer want to be able to poll the status of each software. For many of them, the supplier provide snmp agent that must be installed on the server. This agent send traps to the console and that works fine. Unfortunatelly, one of the software installed doesn't include any snmp agent and doesn't report error to the console. On the mib files, I can see that these software is define like the other, with all the possible errors. My question is : Is it possible to install any snmp agent on this server or I should have specific agent like the other servers? I know it's a bit confused, but I just want to know if a mib is enough to monitor a system? If yes, where this mib should be palced? Thank you

The MIB file doesn't really affect what a particular agent can send, it just allows you to interpret what the agent sends. Where you put the MIB on the client system is not material.

Compiling or importing the MIB into a decent management console allows the trap or poll results from the agent to be presented in human readable form - that is the main value of the MIB.

There is really no way to answer your question about what agent is required without having the specifics of the operating system and software you are working with.
