is it possible to read a flat text file as a database table?

Hi,
i have an application that utilizes a text file (that's supplied by users), load it into an access table and then queries for a particular string in a field. my question is this: is it possible to tread the text file as a table and use sql statements against it? how would the fields defined? etc.
