Is it possible to give a task in plan a predecessor which is in another plan using MS Project 2002.

i.e. to split plans up into multiple plans, each concentrated on different streams.

Yes.

Let's assume you have:

plan P1.MPP with tasks T11, T12 and T13
plan P2.MPP with tasks T21, T22 and T23

Start Project and you'll have an empty plan on the screen.

1. Click on the first task; click on Insert | Project. On the pop-up dialog you'll see a box labelled "Link to Project". This should have a check mark in it. Navigate to the file P1.MPP and double-click on it.

This will insert the project plan P1.MPP into your new plan. The plan is completely collapsed and appears as a single line with a plus sign to the left.

2. Click on the second task and repeat the insert process but this time insert P2.MPP.

3. Click on the plus signs to expand both projects.

4. Link the two tasks you want to link.

5. Click File | close

6. You will be asked if you want to save the changes to Project1 (this is the blank project you just created). Answer No.

7. You will be asked if you want to save the changes to P1.MPP. Answer Yes.

8. You will be asked if you want to save the changes to P2.MPP. Answer Yes.

From now on those tasks will behave just as if they were in the same project plan. If one is delayed then the start of the other will be delayed. If you want to break the link, do that in exactly the same way as you would normally break a link between tasks.

Hello PDQBach

I have tried this. However, when two projects are linked into a single new project, I am not able to link a task to a predecessor which is in another linked project.

i.e. if there are only 5 tasks in the first project linked (P1) and 3 tasks in the second project linked in (P2), then when you link a task 3 of P2 to task 4, it creates a new task in P2, rather than linking task 3 of P2 to task 4 of P1.

Is there something I am doing wrong? I have tried entering 1.4 as a predecessor task, however, this does not work either.
