we've had lag spikes ever since we got cable. i've used other that have the same isp as me, so i know its not just cable in general. i think it might be our modem. so i would like suggestions on alternative modems(no more than $50) other than what is provided standard.

if you think it is something else please tell me.
yes i'm running torrents but i already know thats not it.

Well to my knowledge there is not a perticular Standard, You did not specify what you have as a modem, what cable system you are on, if you bought the hardware or are leasing, what the others you have accessed on are using.
Basically, you have stated that you are having a problem??? with access and it might be modem related... can anyone tell me what it is??

There are few if any cable modems for less than $50 US.

If you are leasing, have the provider replace it.

What type of system & OS are you running??

kelmar666,

Your ISP should probably be the first place to start. Have them come out and test your line and provide you with a functioning modem.

1. i am using the one that time warner proived
2. pcx1100u by toshiba
4. we use a router to split to the multiple computers
3. we've had them come out and, unless they catch a lag spike, they say its fine.

for me it is short burst of packet loss. i'm playing a game and then everything appears to freeze up and i can't move. it's because my computer isn't able to cominicate the game server that i am conected to.

basically my internet drops out for a few seconds (5-10 secs)

FWIW, I've suffered similarly, and wondered how to solve it.

I'm wondering if it is WinXP as my Win2K laptop on the same gateway router doesn't suffer.

thats pretty intersting. maybe i ought to try dual os xp and w2k and see if i get problems for w2k.

A new modem might well work, but I suspect other things. What type of modem do you have now? Is your neighborhood excessivly busy? Cable speed is affected by how many users are on the local segment at a time. I can go as slow as 100k during a busy time to over 800k on an off peak period. Who is your provider? What type of speed do you get from dslreports.com?

1 pcx1100u by toshiba

2 i don't know but 100k would be fine. as a matter of fact it not a low overall speed. its short 5 second bursts of high latency

3 time warner

4 i'm not registered with dslreports.com
