is illustrator cs a super old program? 2

i use to have illustrator 9 but now i have illustrator cs. is cs older than 9? i don't understand where cs fits in the list of oldest to newest versions. does it go like this:
illustrator
illustrator cs
illustrator 2
illustrator 3
illustrator 4 etc...

and where does cs2 fit? i get the impression it's newer than 10.

and what's the difference between the cs's and the regular ones?

i'm obviously a newbie at this!

Illustrator CS = Illustrator 11
Illustrator CS2 = Illustrator 12

blueark is right, and the "CS" stands for "Creative Suite". The Creative Suite package was introduced a couple years ago by Adobe, when OSX apps were first coming out. Creative Suite was a package of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. CS2 is the next version of Creative Suite.
