Is Dual Emulation Possible?

Does anyone know if it's possible to run Mars_NWE and Samba at the same time on a single Linux server? I'm currently running a mixed Netware/Windows network, and would like to "migrate" the clients to one single protocol on each workstation and one single client. Currently, I'm running IPX and IP. I'm also having to run the MS client and the Novell client. If I could run both emulators on a single server, I could then start migrating workstations to IP and then use Samba to finish the conversion.

I'm basically supporting 50 clients for file and print services.

I am not a network administrator, but I know that any admins who respond will want to know the NetWare and Windows version numbers.

That said, using only one protocol is entirely possible; both networks support TCP/IP and , strangely, new versions of NetWare don't seem to support IPX/SPX very well. Our network uses NetWare (6.x) and Windows (W2k & W2k3) networking; it is all TCP/IP and we are currently running both eDir and AD as a method to migrate from NetWare to Windows networking. We do run both clients.

From what I can see on GOOGLE about Mars_ MWE, it looks like an old IPX/SPX emulator (I only found three news group messages about it - dated 1995, 1996 and 2001). It doesn't look like you will need it if you convert the Novell servers to TCP/IP.

So, I would look into converting the Novell network to TCP/IP first; that's what was done here and it seems to have worked pretty well. Then you can simplify your life and run both networks on a single protocol. I think the basic network tranmission protocol is a separate issue from using SAMBA; an admin may say otherwise, I don't know.

Hopefully you'll get information from someone with better qualifications and information than I can offer.

I agree with fmcgawan.
I used to run a heterogenous network
with Novell 3.x , 4.x, Windows NT and
Linux. The IPX/IP disparities ensured
that everything would have to be done
twice in many cases.
We finally migrated to IP and a whole
set of problems were eased. Filtering,
logical addressing, broadcast traffic, etc..
I used mars_nwe for file service to bindery
clients. I don't think it is going to be
of very much service to you and I have found
that with newer versions of glibc and gcc it
is getting hard to get this legacy software
to compile.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the help. All I need to do now is figure out how to run a login script from Linux.
