Dear All
Now a days Programmer are facing one question from posible client. Is it Visual?

I wonder why Visual needed. With using less resources clipper provides better result. Only thing is that it cann't print Desktop Publishing Quality report.

Is some body notice that same types of work done by today's jorgon development tools require 1000 times more resources, needs more support and uses atleast double time to do job.

A 386 computer with minimum configuration can perform any work faster with same types of input and outputs as compare a PIII computer with Visual program.

If program have to work on internet (not other networking) or display and place grapics then Clipper cann't do.

Why not we start Compagain with slogan "Quality work with minimum resources"

Unfortunatly, we Clipper programmers do not carry enough weight in the world to dictate to the powers that be to allow DOS applications continue unhindered. The masses are being told (and they believe) that looking at all the pretty pictures on the screen is the way to go. Tell a user that they have to go to a DOS prompt to accomplish something and you can hear the synopsis misfire over the phone.

Even thought GUI programs are resource hogs, we no longer live in a time where upgrading the hardware is so expensive. In the old DOS world, DOS programs had to be efficient with what was available to them. I remember paying $500 for a 325 Meg hard drive and RAM prices were just as bad. With the advances in technology, prices have dropped so much that if an application needs more memory or disk space a second thought isn't wasted on deciding to upgrade.

With the market going full steam towards a fully visual computing environment, it is a little late to start a movement to push the idea to do the same with less. The 'More Is Better' attitude has taken the computer industry by storm and is not about to let go.

I just migrated to VFP6.0. The transition was awesome. Very similar syntax, with less coding (visual), and robust data structure and no NTX corruptions. (remember those days!). I still love clipper, and I still use it. But, the money is now in Visual development. I mean, After 2000,ME, and now xp. We have to move. I tried Xbase++, didn't like it. Though, it is 100% clipper compatible, I didn't find it easy to use. FiveWin? never tried it. Why not Visual Dbase7, or VFP7.0?... Hey, uses the same syntax, no new language to lear, the only thing you have to learn is to program in an OOP envirement, and trust me, it will pay off.

Thank you

Friends, Fivewin are the answer, I have 3 years that I use it and every day I astonish to me but, is the true one to clipper for Windows, before fivewin tries to use line of visual BASIC, after access and by I complete line of visual fox and can't find the high performance of clipper+fivewin, if to clipper he is fast and often fivewin is but fast. At the moment use Fivewin Verison 2,3 (It ultimate version) and is 15 times more fast that Visual Fox, 10 Times more fast that Visual BASIC and 20 times more fast that Access, the systems in fivewin are totally independent of Windows and are true programs for Windows. If you want to make excellent reports, graphics and presentations use fivewin and transfer your old dos clipper systems to Windows and to be continued using our dear Clipper

FIVEWIN creates true EXEs Systems and not like Visual BASIC, Visual Fox and Access that depend on DLLs and their feasible ones require of you interpret them and they are VERY SLOW. Inmaginate to be able to have a complete system with INSTALL, EXE, REPORTS and DATA in a single diskette

whenever I watch the programs in visial xxxxx I like more Clipper+Fivewin

For information about last releases of Fivewin and Harbour (Clipper 32bits) visit

Sorry my poor english ;)

dear SNKARKI

Clipper was a very good system (since the manufacturer {nantucket later taken over by Computer Associates} no longer supports it) and is also a very good system, depending on the way we develop our software.

However the main reason for people shifting to VISUAL software is because clipper is no longer being supported on WINDOWS platform. we dont have much enhancements on clipper working under WINDOWS, on the contrary, we have VISUAL FOX AND VISUAL DBASE both of which are supported on WINDOWS.

if u can shift to these visual products, u would be lucky enough to be in the similar field, or may be if u wish to stick to DOS based OS, its too late.

better decide fast

i have already shifted to "C" with backend as btrieve, which has more data integrity, i.e., u cant modify the data without knowing the data definition file.

best of luck

Our Company has successfully made the migration from our Clipper 5.2e application using Alask's XBase++. Because the language is Clipper 5.2 compatable, it allowed the migration process to concentrate on screens and left all our business logic untouched.

XBase is not the easiest development environment to do GUI in though. But that will be addressed this year with the release of VXBase. Having seen the product demonstrated at the US Devcon for XBASE last October, I can say that it will have all of the features like those found in the MS IDE's and more.

There are some excellent third party enhancements to the language as well. One that was very helpful to us is eXPress which allows you to write to a GUI screen with the familiar @ row, col SAY commands.

Whether we like it or not the days of clean fast 16bit apps are gone.

Dear friends, among the variety suggestions written above, what do you think about the development under new .NET technology ?? Maybe Visual Dbase 2000, or Php with MySql.
What of the above mentioned paths would support ?
Maybe important in our choice.

regards.
