I am working on a Compaq Presario dinosaur for a friend and decided that the best thing to do would be to upgrade the motherboard and processor. The motherboard looks like an ATX, but I know that Compaq and HP used to make their cases proprietary so that you had to replace it with their components. Has anyone tried to put a new motherboard in a Presario 5600 and if so, any thoughts on MB size or particular model? Thanks.

Excuse me for my opinion if it irrates you :

A new mobo, new processor, new ram (probably
necessay for new processor) proprietary PS that
has a different power connector (maybe for your
model), hdd that is too small.....

What could be left that can be used?

Upgrading motherboard and processor with today's hardware prices is probably not an economical solution.
Beware of using non Compaq parts in a Compaq computer.

It's just my opinion, and I've had this one for a while: When you upgrade the Motherboard, your basically building a completely new computer- correct me if I am wrong here.

I've replaced a Compaq mother board in a Preario (not an upgrade) and it cost a pretty penny (replacement was for a fried MB). Not worth it as far as I'm concerned...I'd either build a new one or buy a new one, preferably not a compaq. They are to proprietary and it wasn't easy to get the replacement I was looking for. My preference is Dell and they are less proprietary then others. It is my understanding that Compaq does put out a good system, but that would be a higher end business system, not something you can get at your local best buy or store of that sort....

They do make a really good business system.

Changing the mainboard means you will need new ram, new processor at a minimum...

I was service authorized on Compaq computers and notebooks for a long time, and almost all of the systems that came in for upgrade went out with my seal...
Not an economical solution...

Why not build an inexpensive clone computer?

Prices these days are so low you can set one up for next to nothing ...especially compared to what you will spend trying to upgrade that thing.
