Is anyone using the deduplication feature?

We use the hardware de-dupe on our Quantum disk array, I have been told by Commvault's sales people on recent visits that it (Simpana) will provide similar results. Was have 200 TB of server backups being stored on ~19TB physical - the biggest bene of SImpana is you can de-dupe that tape data also - so you save on tape costs. The bene of the hardware de-dupe on the Quantum is that it offloads it to the Quantum, with Simpana you have a server (Media agent) doing the work. Your data will ultimately provide the reduction rate but overall I would say you should be able to get at least 5:1 reduction

We are using DeDup within CV8.0. Disk to Disk to Tape. For the Dedup with about 38 servers after the initial fulls and then about 2 weeks with incremental and syn fulls we got a 79 to 89% reduction. We have a new CV system ie 3 weeks old DC, File and APP servers with about 10TB which on disk shows
Total 12310.59 GB; Space on Disk 2478.78 GB; Savings of 9831.81 GB 79.86% svrascbu02
In a html report this looks better. With the data managed drive space even after it goes to tape it's still available until you begin to run out of space and then the CV begins to overwrite items that have been sent to tape unless the retention is set differently. Our retention policy is 14 days on disk 30 days on tape with Data managed set. We have about 10TB on disk available so the report above is 3 weeks of backups. At 10TB we could essentially have 12-15 weeks of backups immediatly available and the offsite disks being able to be rewritten in 30 days. How many restores and the what's your business risk factor for your servers or a few of the critical servers is a question vs the cost of the 90K. It also depends on your retention policies and what liability you have exceeding your retention policies Managment level decisions.
