We are installing Micro Focus Cobol Server Express... Has anyone installed version 2.2 yet that could assist me with the installation?

Drew

I've installed it at a half dozen or so sites. The only critical step in the installation is to make sure you install it in 32 bit mode - the rest of the defaults will not hurt you in any way, but you'll have to modify the syscfg.xml if you let it install into the default /opt/lib/cobol location.

After searching for the doco and a couple of hours reading i've I installed Server Express however I also raised a Work Order with Mincom. I found the sysconfig.xml and Ellipse Info Pack Document 'Ellipse for Unix & Windows Install & Operations Guide & Ref.pdf' were different. Also EAC did not update sysconfig.xml correctly which included updates for Server Express. The other confusing point is Both the Micro Focus and Mincom Documentation details to install the Server Express Develpment System and Applications Server into differing locations, however the installation script supplied by Micro Focus defaults both to the same location.
I also installed it in 64 bit mode on our Tru64 5.1A Server - I didn't seem to have any problems.
Thanks for your response. Drew

EAC does not update syscfg.xml(at least not the last version I saw). You update syscfg.xml, and then restart EAC to get it to pick up the changes. Or you can just install all the cobol components to something like /opt/svrexp2.2 or whatever is in syscfg.xml to get around the problem in the first place.

Mincom recommends using a different app server and developer server because apparently the app server is more efficient in its use of licenses. I have no idea if this is the case or not, and I generally just install it into one place to make keeping track of the licenses simpler(you get difficult to track down error messages if your app server licenses are installed in the developer cobol, and you are subscribed to the appserver cobol - remember this to prevent heartache if you use two different locations). Haven't run into any real problems with clients who have gone into production this way, but it would be interesting to see a benchmark and find out what is really happening.

I haven't ever been on a Tru64 system, so I have no firsthand experience there. However, on HP-UX 11i 64 bit Server Express causes the cobol programs to fail. If you can successfully run something like mimsrts MSB000 then you do not have the same problem.

1. ServerExpress Application Server only contains the runtime system. You cannot compile cobol program using AppServer.
2. The license key for Application Server and Developer is different. For each developer user license, you have 5 developer runtime user licenses. However, the developer runtime license has a 30 seconds delay time. In the other words, the license is locked for 30 seconds after the program is completed. It can causes major problem in Production environment. The Application server license does not have that restriction.
3. All Ellipse customers should receive 2 license keys. One for the Developer and another one for the AppServer.

In theory, you can install both AppServer and Developer under the same directory as long as you install Developer before AppServer. However, there is some potential risk and that's why both Mincom and MicroFocus recommended using different installation location.

Mincom recommends the following installation location:
Appserver - /opt/svrexp/appsvr/<version>
Developer - /opt/svrexp/dvlpr/<version>

Hope this clears things up a bit.
