I asked our supplier about upgrading to 25.40. They tell me it is no longer possible as Nortel are no longer shipping it. Upgrade must now go to succession 3.
kcom are fine. I used them at the last firm for all my maint needs and they were great. Always there when I asked and always did what they were told. Even supported our 1.5 symposium (ran on NT3.5....)
It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.
The official message from Nortel was that the last date for ordering a upgrade to 25.40 was 30th.nov. 2003.
Upgrades ordered after that date would be to a Succession rls. And since all upgrades must go trough Nortels official program, you know that OTM and Succession is just waiting to put their wet and sticky fingers in your switch ;-)
I say go for it, Softphones, T-LAN's, E-LAN's, WLAN's....
Test it, much to learn there.
Upgrade to Sucession 3 is not that bad. I have done many and have had no problem yet. The only problem is that NORTEL no longer charges for TNs. You get 2500 TNs with Option 11C. The problem is they are now charging you for ITG trunks, Analog phones, digital phones, and ITG line phones. If you buy a new switch with 3 analog and 3 digital cards, they only give you enough ISM paramaters to cover the cards they sold you. i.e. 48 analog phones, 48 digital phones. If they sell you an ITG trunk you will get 32 ITG trunks (in groups of 8). Traditional trunks is still 2500. Sounds like they are cutting out the secondary market purchase of cards. When you upgrade an existing system, you will receive the correct amount of ISM paramenters to cover your switch along with any new cards sold to you from the vender. You may purchase above what you have probably. I have not run into that yet. Course you will have to pay $$$ (or whatever your currency is). I keep forgeting this is an international forum.
You do NOT have to go to IP phones when upgrading to S 3 software as it is Sucession 1000M (for all Options) without a Signaling Server OR Sucession 1000 for IP type phones with Signaling Server.
Unkalary is correct in that with the Succession 3.0 release Nortel is trying to eliminate the secondary market providers. It is possible to buy extra licensing but the vendor has to build it into the system or upgrade quote. Also if you buy new cards (analog or digital station) you don't have to fully license them as the licenses are added in groups of 8 while the cards add 16 or 32 ports. Also upgrades are no longer a flat fee but based on the number of TN's which are being upgraded. This really impacts owners of large (81C) systems. Unfortunately Nortel has been losing large amounts of money in recent years and I guess that this is one way to restore profitability. I am not happy that Nortel has decided to outsource a lot of its tech support to India. I got so frustrated getting patches done with them that I got my employer to send me to patch class (as Nortel encourages) so that I can insert them myself.
rel 25.xx is not sold anymore. You can buy extra licenses for an existing 25.xx pbx but not upgrade to it.
Why should you buy an old software version?
Its like buing a new car witch has been standing in the shop for 3 years. Is it new?
rel 3.0 is the best investment in years from Nortel.
there is almost no limits what you can do or use it to.
if you want to use it the traditional way like you always have, do it. Want to go for IP? do it. Want to go for a mix? Do it. It's simple.
yes, everything is licensed. That is just another way to set prices. It also has advantages. ( for the customers )
You can buy extra cards and install in your system.
The licences can be bought with or without hardware from your supplier.
Yes, I know that everyone wants to have everything for free.
It doesnt work that way. Nortel have to get some money for the things that they do.
Its not more money for the same stuff now, it just another way to do it.
