I have an AMD Athlon XP 2600, and i have been having trouble cooling the system. I cant really get the cpu temp under 120 degrees F or 50 degrees C, is this way too hot and will it damage my cpu?
No, not at all, this is perfectly normal temperature, and quite safe.
In my experience in the UK with room temps in the low 20's Centigrade, idles are normally in the high 40's and maximums in the mid 50's, this is about average for an XP2.6+ CPU.
Some will report lower than this I'm sure but take it from me these temps are nothing unusual.
Generally it is accepted that below 60C max is absolutely fine and dandy but things can begin to get a little flakey once the CPU hits the mid 60's
Athlon core maximum temps (the point at which damage can occur) range between 85 and 95C , although these CPU's will fall over (blue screen/lock up etc) well before temps get anywhere close to this.
Of course if you are still bothered by your temps you might be able to fit a better CPU cooler and improve on case cooling with more fans, your call.

50'ish is about right, I personally don't like them running much more that 55/60. However I'm putting a batch of HP dx2000's - Celeron 2.5Ghz - the BIOS system warnings are fixed at 85C/185F to get a warning and at 90C/194F to get a system shutdown. Definitely wouldn't recommend running at anything close to those type of temperatures, generally speaking the cooler the better. If your worried then the addition of one or two 80mm case fans will help, I'd recommend these Antec units:
