Is 1’574 GB of images space (with DBPix) workable on an Access DB? 1

Hi, i have an Access application that must work in Access 2000, 2002 (XP), 2003 and 2007 Access versions. The application uses DBPix for the image treatment in the DB.

They are 486 records, with an average of 12 images per record of 270 KB each image: 486 · 12 · 270 = 1’574 GB of images space. Only one record at a time has to be shown.

Is the application going to be workable without low speed or hang-up problems?

Total size is 1.574Gb of space. Although the is below the maximum file size of an mdb or accdb file of 2Gb, it doesn't leave much room for expansion.
A far better way is to store the path to the image file (on external storage) then open it from the external storage from your application.
This will drastically reduce the data storage requirements as well as speed up your application data access.

Even if you choose to use a client/server database such as SQL Server, Oracle or MySQL to store your images and link to it from an Access front end application, with binary files they will bloat quite considerably.

You can try an ActiveX control called AccessImagine (

http://access.bukrek.net

). It can store images outside database automatically if you need it.

It makes adding images to database more convenient - you can load from file, scan, paste from buffer or drag-n-drop. You can crop image right inside the database and have it resampled.
