I have been trying to install a 3Com network card in my system. I have not seen any IRQ / RESOURCE conflicts of any kind. The only hardware that posts a warning in the system menue is the 56K modem I'm using....it reads:
WARNING: IRQ3 is used by another device, please free that resource if you want to use HSP56 Micromodem with DOS application. IN WIndows98 the modem works fine, connects as usual.
The problem is when I install the network card it will hang in the PnP installation causing me to have to reboot (illegal shutdown) then when it trys to reboot after a scan it stalls on the Windows 98 start up splash screen (as if it can't open the network screen, where I enter my username and password for the network). I can reboot in safe mode but I have no idea what changes to make or if any changes are really needed since there are no resource conflicts noted. But my gut instinct tells me there is something...I just don't have a clue what! I had to completely remove the network card before the system would boot. ANy help is appreciated.

Hello, puterbug.

As you have already your box cover opened, try to insert your NIC on another slot and reinstall.

Already tried that. The UWave MB that's being used has one AGP slot (Where I have GEForce NVIda installed) and three PCI slots...The first slot is carrying HSP56 Modem the second slot is empty and the third slot is where I tried the NIC card... I get the same response on both available slots. Any other suggestions?

puterbug,

Have a routine check on your bios settings, in particular, look into the page on PCI/PnP setup. For instance, the PCI Slot_N's are set to AUTO? Also IRQ3 - IRQ15 etc, see if they are set to PCI/PnP. After from what accommodate to your GEForce, investigate if the options open to you for Slot_N setting to custom IRQ_X. (In most cases, IRQ9 or IRQ10 may be the possible candidate for NIC to use.)

But, before doing anything take note on the IRQ's used currently from browsing through the Device Manager. From that you may have an idea what IRQ's are still avail to you. Then, consider manually set the IRQ associated with Slot_N where you insert the NIC. Then, read again manual for NIC see if software configuration of it may help.

This can be an annoying problem and can take some playing around. If you remove the modem and leave the NIC in the computer does the NIC install and run properly?
If it does - check the BIOS settings - shut down things that are not being used - is the second com port used if not disable it - . After the NIC is installed then install the modem. Hope this helps

IRQ 5 & 9 are available. I can (Sort of) get the modem to work without the NIC card installed. I have my network settings set with Client for MS NEtwork, MS DIalup adapter & TCP / IP protocal... It's a little tricky getting the modem to work though. When I remove the NIC card the computer stalls / hangs as the WIN98 splash screen appears. It just sits there as if it's waiting for the BIOS to kick in. I've tried a lot of different approaches to get this thing to boot normal. My most successful attempt was to reboot in safe mode and run msconfig... If I disable all items in the start menue and remove ALL network clients, adapters & protocals then reboot, the system will do a full boot in normal mode. However, the system does not pick up my dial up adapter... I have to manually add back my dialup adapter, client & protocal for my modem useage and I have run "msconfig" to re-add my start menue items, one by one (doing a reboot after each one is added). When I have the majority of them loaded I can return to normal boot in msconfig and everything (modem only) works great...but I still can't get the Network user name and password screen to appear.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the Network user name and password screen still come up even without the NIC card if my network setting indicate Client for MS network, dialup adapter & TCP /IP protocal? The icon for MS Network is on my desktop. But no screen to sign on to network has EVER appeared...either with or without the NIC card installed.
It's as though, if the network user name and password screen is suppose to come up that's when the system stalls and I have to reboot in safe mode and make changes in "MSconfig" start up before I can get a normal boot.
TO answer "Goaway": I have tried only the NIC card...actually I've tried two different brands NIC cards..ASOUnd 10/100 as well as the 3Com NIC card. Keep getting the same thing...system stalls where the network user name and password appears I reboot in safe mode and Run msconfig to disable start menue items. I am fairly sure there is something I'm not doing right, cause I know both NIC cards can't be bad (ASound is brand new, 3Com is used). I'm not familiar enough with networking to solve this one on my own. My only other option is to replace this MB and get on with intergrated LAN connection. That will solve all my problems. But I wouldn't have learned anything in doing so.
I really appreciate all your help. I am very greatful to all who reply. THanks

Hello, puterbug.

I think yes, the logon dialog should turn up with or without NIC properly installed under normal circumstances if Client for MS Network is chosen. But, this is only the normal state. It seems registry key is valunerable to be altered during the installation or else due to some device conflict history.

To get back the network logon dialog, the basic mskb article is :

The instructions there are good enough to get it back. Read carefully, though.

Thanks for your help. I'm also curious. I have a Xerox M940 that is suppose to connect USB. I don't have a USB cable and so I'm using the Parrallel cable / port to connect ... if I connect the printer I have system hang when it boots. If I disable the parrallel port or disconnect the printer the computer boots fine and my I have no other problems. Could this also have something to do with the LAN card problems? Should I buy a USB cable and try hooking up the LAN card with the Modem again? This is not something new...it's actually been occuring all along it's just I'm now considering the potential association to my 3Com problem. The device manager in control panel does not indicate a resource conflict...no exclamation marks on anything.... But when I review the properties settings on my modem it does warn that if I want to use this device in DOS IRQ3 is used by another device. I would only be using my modem in windows .. I never do anything in DOS...or do I?

puterbug,

Am afraid I am not sessioned enough along that side of the story. Maybe somebody can help you there.
