I have a customer with a 500 processor and he wants some redundancy in that if the phone system crashed another one picked up for it (almost like a backup domain controller would for a primary domain controller I guess)Cost is not really an issue for this customer. I know he could have another processor preprogrammed etc, but is there a way to have another 500 come online automatically when the other fails?

You need to have IP Phones and some way the trunks move to the other ip500.
The standby IP500 must be connected by SCN to the primairy IP500.

Even iff you have a switching trunk then the phones should restart and find the other Phone systems by DHCP.

I see no other way

TeleEngineer,

From 5.0 up the phones try to find the original IPO 3 times with 1 minute in between.
After three minutes it will try to register to the backup IPO.

To get them back on the original IPO you need to reboot the phones but that can be done with monitor one by one or a couple each time.

I would call that a backup system, not redundancy since you have downtime! With true redundancy usually no downtime! At least that is how we define it in the USA.

You are right, it is not redundancy but Resiliency
For redundancy you need a CM/Aura.
But then you pay for it.
The midmarket does not always need redundancy.

3 minute downtime is not all that bad as long as another IPO comes up, my question is that if I have a PRI in one spot and then that IPO goes down, then the IP phones connect to the backup IPO-it has to use the backup IPO's dial tone? So Incoming calls to the main site would have to be forwarded to the backup site?

You need to pull the cable from the main to be backup ipo.
Or you need a device that can split it up for you.
