I have read some really brilliant posts about IPO updates from folks I consider far smarter thank I am, but it left me with one question. This is my first IPO system, having installed many Partner systems which are basically "install and forget" (except for user changes).

We are currently running an IPO R7 at our largest location and everything is really going well (knock on wood or wood-like product). I read in the 8.1 announcement that there is now no Avaya support for 7.0. I have never used support (thanks to Tek-Tips) and had this system installed and running for almost two years and installed 7 right after it was released.

I have read the 8.0 and 8.1 summary of new features and none seem really desirable based on our configuration. I don't need any of the new hardware.

Do any of you see a reason for me to upgrade a perfectly stable 7.0 system to 8.1 just to be back in the support window?

Opinions welcome, you folks have taught me a lot.

Do not upgrade for the upgrade unless you need a new feature or if you run into a bug which has been fixed in 8.x.
We have a lot of very happy customers on 7.0 and I want to keep it like that so I don not upgrade these systems until one of the above comes along.

A simple mind delivers great solutions

I agree, unless you need a new features, or have a bug, there is no need to upgrade.

Make sure You have the latest version of R7.0(36), and VM Pro 7.0(35) and You'll be okay.

7.0.36 was very stable. I have had to address weird issues with 8.0.XX. I have not found anything in 8 dot whatever that my clients need so I have downgraded their systems to 7 before install. The cost to upgrade to 9.whatever will be the same as from 7 to 8 so I don't worry. If 9 is so much better then it will be worth the price.

The biggest rule to live by is :-
if it ain't broke don't fix it!

For get V7.0 I have customers who are still perfectly happy on V1.4!

V7.0 is no longer supported by Avaya but if you have not found any issues with it by now then you are unlikely to

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

I agree with if it is not broke don't fix it.

You could upgrade to 8.1 and then a week or two later find out bug issues with that...

Step 1 Upgrade to the latest maintenance release
Step 2 bugs = Y goto 1, Else goto 3
Step 3 Bugs = N; wait for V9 and goto step 2

Thanks for the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" adage; wise and sage advice no matter what tech item we are discussing.

If I wanted to be a good doo-bie and catch up maintenance for our very stable system, which is running IP 500 V2 7.0(12), do I just install the latest or do I have to grab each quarterly release since my installation?

Yes, You can go right to 7.0(36) from 7.0(12), dont worry about the releases in between.
