Hey all,

My GM can now connect to the Exchange Server (Exchange 2007) with his iPhone but he can't delete emails. About 10 seconds after he tries to delete an email an error message pops up that says he can't delete the email. I thought it might be a connectivity issue but he can connect and send and receive emails. Any ideas???

Thanks,

Joe B

How have you configured it? What error exactly? What have you tried?

Zelandakh,

1) He's configured his iPhone to access our mail server directly (<-- is that what you're asking?)

2) The exact verbiage of the error message is: "The message could not be moved to the mailbox: Trash"

3) "I" haven't tried anything because I don't have a clue about iPhones and their configurations.

Everything else on the iPhone is working like he wants it. Even the email is working fine except for not being able to delete email.

Thanks,

Joe B

I'm wondering if he's accessing it as an IMAP4 connection, POP3 connection or Exchange connection.

Um, I don't know how or why but his iPhone started working. I was still looking for answers and he came by my office and thanked me for fixing it. I never made any changes to the server or the firewall, but I didn't tell him that. Here's hoping that it continues to work for him!

Thanks,

Joe B

Sigh, it's not working. I spoke with him earlier and he's still unable to delete emails. Could there be a setting somewhere on the Exchange Server to allow remote deletion of emails? Are there any diagnostic steps I can take?

Thanks,

Joe B

There is no setting. Grab the device, remove the email configuration, and set it back up. There's nothing to it.

Pat's right...as much as I personally don't like the iPhone, it does "just work".

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

Agree - because it *should* be a link to Exchange, removing the config and readding should not only fix the problem but also not harm anything else.

Is there a Trash folder? Can the iPhone be told to delete stuff to Deleted Items. I've had problems like this with Thunderbird users. Exchange uses Deleted Items.

iphone has Exchange specific settings that just work. I've got one, and can't imagine how someone would not get it right. It's pretty straightforward.

When I've had users with similar iPhone difficulties, moving things in folders, and modifying calendar items, the username setup in the mail settings on the iPhone had to match the case of their Exchange Alias EXACTLY otherwise there were some iPhone to Exchange update problems. Found this in a very obscure iPhone user's forum back in August.

If the user's Exchange Alias is set to TNGPicard and their iPhone info is Tngpicard...........things may not work right. So give that a shot

Thanks everyone for the input. I've finally figured out the working/not working issue. When my GM is here at work and his iPhone connects over wifi he can't delete emails. If he is anywhere else where he's connecting over the internet he CAN delete his emails. Any ideas on why he can delete emails if he's connecting to the Exchange Server over the internet but can't do it if he's connecting internally over wifi? Maybe different rights/permissions assignments?

Thanks,

Joe B

I agree with Zel... I have 13 iPhones on my Exchange server and they all "just work". You need to physically take the phone from him and remove and setup the Exchange account again. You want to make sure that he set it up using the "Exchange Mailbox" option and not the "other" option.

Zelandakh and SamTheITman614, will do.

Thanks,

Joe B
