while im waiting for my new router...

My cable modem connects into a 5 port switch.another cable goes from the switch to my computer. the 3rd cable goes from the switch to my PS2 network adapter. however, when i try to log online on my PS2, i get an error on my computer saying there is an IP conflict. what do i do?

Most cable modems will only issue 1 IP address, and are not designed to be uplinked into a switch, although I don't see how that would generate an IP conflict error...

Are you using DHCP on both devices?

A router would take care of this problem...

What Avaya said with spades. A router will solve this post haste.

I didn't realize that you said your computer generated an IP conflict message.

That's just confirming what I said, the modem is only capable of issuing one IP address, thereby giving that address to the most recent request from any entity (ie. your PS2).

A router allows you to use NAT (network address translation) to send and receieve packets through multiple devices, but routed to different destinations. This isn't exactly a router in real terms, but in effect, it can be called that.

Thanks Jin.
