Hi All,

got an IP440 here, and when attaching a cross-cable to the console port(either of two), I get no output. I have set minicom-s to the correct settings, as per the userguide. 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit, running at 9600kbps. Anything I should be looking for that might solve this..? Cheers.

Slap me if this is condesending but i always like to start at the basics.
The cross cable is a serial cable plugged into the serial port of your PC. using a network cable rather than a specific serial cable often causes problerms (SLAP)
Check cable is plugged into COM1 and minicom-s is set to listen on COM1 (SLAP SLAP)
check that your cable works on another machine (SLAP SLAP SLAP)

once thae cable is proved as ok then we can try starting on the box.

The IP440 won't throw anything out onto the console port until the POST is complete and the hard disk boot has commenced.

Since the IP440 is a real PC (that looks like a PC), stick a standard VGA monitor onto the Trident VGA card at the RHS of the port block and check that the POST is completing properly. You may find that a RAM fault or disk failure is stopping the system booting.

Luckily, unlike all the later Nokias, if you do have a failed hard drive, you can drop in any 4Gb or bigger hard drive and use the downloadable BootDisk image to rebuild the whole box. All the later models have the boot manager on either the hard drive or a flash device and the repair is more complex (but quite achievable).

Once you are sure the system is trying to boot, *then* look at the console port for output (using a known-good cable/terminal emulator combination as Piloria suggests).

If the boot fails in any way, try booting from a boot floppy to check basic system operation, and if necessary rebuild the box using the boot floppy and an FTP server or a CD with the required binaries.

Good luck !

Hi All,

ok, I'll bite...

yep, basics r good, eh...

Did I say I was using a network cable..? I was using a cross serial cable..shall I slap you back..?

Check cable is plugged into COM1 and minicom-s is set to listen on COM1 (SLAP SLAP)

Yeah, actually, I use minicom -s to administer Cisco/Avaya/Cabletron and others. Shall I slap slap you back here too..?

check that your cable works on another machine (SLAP SLAP SLAP)

I am well aware that the cables work...slap slap slap here also..?

once thae cable is proved as ok then we can try starting on the box.

Yep, sounds exciting..lol...cheers.

Hi All,

ok, I've done as suggested. Seems that the pevious owner has erased the OS. I'm in Japan, Tokyo, and it's common for them to do this, as they are required to erase all previous owner's data b4 reselling by law. I guess the reseller decided it was easier to just wipe the OS, then wipe specific data.

Is this a specific BootDisk from Nokia, for this system.? Where can I get this from.? Sorry, I know my questions may sound mundane, but, I really have no experience with Nokia systems, at all.

Ok, that is also good info if I do ever get a later model. Cheers.

Mark,

You need to log on to the Nokia support site, and then use the support menu to get to the downloads section.

You'll be able to download all you need for rebuilding the IP440 OS from there. You'll need:

1. ipso.tgz image for your chosen version.

2. The BootFloppy.bin image for your chosen version. The Nokia resolution suggests using another IP440 to create the boot floppy using the dd command, obviously if you don't have another IP440 this isn't easy. You can however use dd from any unix (or Linux) based box to the raw floppy device, or there are several Windows versions of dd (Usually known as 'rawrite') that will do the same job.

3. You may also want the IPSO documentation install package for completeness.

You will need a Nokia support site login to get these files. You *may* be able to get the ipso.tgz and nic-doc3x.tgz files from another Nokia unit depending on how it was last rebuilt. If all else fails you could try contacting the guys at - they may be able to help you.

Hi All,

thanx, but, since I don't have a licensed product, even thought I tried registering, I'm guessing they won't issue me a password to access the images etc(now got a 2 day wait to see what they do). Cheers.
