I am trying to set up ip softphone over a vpn network. I have some folks that want to work from home a few days of the week. Does anyone have any information on what ports I need to open in the firewall to get this to work.

Are you actually blocking any ports on the vpn? Most vpn connections have all the ports open. Just make sure you set the softphone to use the ip of the vpn connection not the local ip.

Good link on the port usage.

What is the issue?
If you are unable to login: Ports 1719 UDP and 1720 TCP must be open

If you can login but can't hear the called party: Do a "disp ip-network-regi" You will see a range of ports the Medpro will use to place the call. These use UDP protocol

What type of vpn client are they running?

In the future everything will work...

I am running cisco vpn. I have not turned off the pc firewall yet though. Is this needed to ip softphone over vpn?

I had the same problem when attempting to run Soft Phone over a Cisco VPN connection. I can place the call but I cannot hear the other party and they cannot hear me.

What protocol are you using for VPN? Make sure your PC firewall/home router has it set "Pass Through" enabled ie IPsec Passthrough or PPTP Passthrough.

softbatch...do a list trace station XXXX and tell us what the error is...most likely the codec is not correct. ie one ip-network-region codecs not the same. Also turn off IP to IP direct connections on the ip-network-region for inter-networking. That will allow you to do ip to ip connections on the LAN, but force the medpro to do the connections on the WAN.

In the future everything will work...

its been said in a round about way, but here it is up front and personal

fyi: some VPN software blocks certain ports. check with the vpn app and see what it blocks.

hey softbatch, can you use IP Softphone when you are on your internal network and not using VPN tunneling?

I can get my softphone to work on the internal network, but not when I go through the VPN tunnel. It connects, sometimes the phone is actually functional for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, but then it says the network connection was lost and immediately logs back in with the same behavior...

I'm totally at a loss...any ideas?

Make sure your VPN supports VoIP. They may limit your bandwidth. Also make sure that you keep the connect live. If you can lgin and make calls, it is NOT a port issue. More than likely the Firewall or router need to be configured correctly.

This is a good resource for IP telephony. It may have the optimized config for your systems....

In the future everything will work...

Don't forget that the Avaya IP softphone does not support NAT. Any port mapping must be disabled or the softphone will not be able to reach the C-LAN or Med-Pro.

Hi Guys ,
I just thought I would mention, I have been using my ip softphone with an avaya usb headset for the last 3 months and have had no problems.I am using cisco vpn version 3.5. I am also using it in road warrior mode.
