Hi all, new to the forum and new to telecoms which I've inherited responsibility for by default (nobody else wanted the job)

Senario:
BCM450 (installed by BT on subnet 192.168.11 been in for years, no issues. recently upgraded to V6 software - no issues.

Recently opened up a new office on different subnet 192.168.23.

All linked together via VPN installed by Group HO using MPLS circuits provided by Alternative Networks - a division of TalkTalk in the UK

VPN is fine, I can ping/see/create shortcuts to all my servers except the BCM450 box.

Problems:

1) When I plug in a voip handset I get server unreachable (have reconfigured the handset with new ip address - leaving the S1 address as was.

2) I have no control over the (Cisco) routers, these are managed by Alternative Networks

3) Cannot call A/N direct - have to go through group IT manager who is not responding to my calls

Tried: - last night I connected my home PC into a legacy VPN (server 2003 VPN server) and was able to ping the BCM450, so my guess is going to be something to do with traffic routing/ports on the group MPLS circuits. So I need to shout at someone

It would be nice to actually tell them what the problem is and how to fix it.

Any ideas???

Should add - I've also de-regisered the extension(s) on the BCM450 - which is what a nice BT man told me to do , but it didn't work

Have you setup a VLAN to route your voice traffic between the two subnets? Typically a Voice VLAN is established and tagged at the L3 level to route that traffic accordingly. Your ISP would be responsible for handling the routing of the VLAN traffic from the sounds of things, but you would need to provide them with the correct network information so they can process the data request.

Hope that helps?

Thanks for the response hunter81

It seems our BCM450 doesn't have a default gateway set. I'm being told that once this has been set everything should be ok.

I can set this through elements manager. I'm just nervous in case it upsets the current working phones on the main subnet.

Bt support said that it should work but if it doesn't any remedial work will not be covered by our support contract because it wasn't one of there engineers that did the work (they quoted 3-4 weeks to get an engineer to do the job. Good old BT :)

That will sure do it! The gateway is what will route your subnet raffic to the L3 router and allow the router to route the trunked traffic between sites and allow the second buildings subnet to talk to the core router. So yes setting the gateway is a requirement to make any 2 networks talk together.

If you set or tweak the IP configuration it will RE-SET your BCM.
JUST FYI.

I can only give you my sympothy on using 3rd party contracts & vendors for it's a on-going battle for me to. I just wish companies understood the impact of such cheap alternatives to training or hireing sufficiant FTE to support their infrastructure.

That sounds about right, but my company is a little quicker that that!. Anyway, the default gateway as suggested is the important part and will need changing.

All the best

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

Thanks to all who responded. Happy to report all ip phones on the new subnet now working.

Can now go of on my Hols stress free
