IP phones getting IP addresses-basics

I'm fooling around with my VMWare version of CCM 4.1 using Windows 2000 Server (also virtual) in my basic home lab. I admit that I have a lot to learn, so don't blast me that I should already know this. I'm wondering - my virtual server has its IP address, but where are my two IP phones going to get their IP addresses from? The server or the 2600 router I'm consoled into with my laptop? I have CCM on my laptop running VMWare, a 2600 router connected to a 2950 switch, into which I have two IP phones connected.

If the IPs should come from the router, do I then need to setup a DHCP pool there? If from the server, how would I get it (in VMWare) to hand my IP phones IP addresses?

Thanks.

you need to use an ip helper to the dhcp server, then set up a dhcp pool on the server OR you can set up a dhcp pool on the router, either way make sure to use option 150 to the tftp server (your pub).

Ok, so where does the IP address of the server (in my case in VMWare) come into play? If I set up the router's IP and DHCP, and the IP phone is going to be in the same subnet as the router, then the IP addy of the CCM server won't necessarily be a part of that subnet?

It will be part of the subnet, you will have to exclude it from the DHCP range however.
