HI GUYS, HOPE YOU CAN GIVE SOME TIPS REGARDING WHAT I WANT TO DO.

I have NEC DTERM IP PHONES and normal PC's. Want them connected to my HP Procurve 2626 switch. Want voice and data on separate vlans but don't want phones and pc's connected separately, i want the pc's connected to the phones (they come with a built in hub for connecting a pc) so the phones ans pcs will be using one fisical connection to the switch. My question is how to tell the phones or the pcs to run over either one of my vlans if both are using the same connection to the switch?

Hello NDPERU -

The answer is PERHAPS: it depends on whether the NEC IP Phone can be configured to specify the VOICE traffic to belong to a Tagged VLAN and allow the Data traffic to be passed thru as Untagged traffic.

At the 2626, simply create a VLAN for your voice traffic and add that port as a "tagged" port to that vlan, while creating (or simply use the Default VLAN #1) and add the port to the vlan as an "untagged" port.
Example config statements:
vlan 200
name "VOICEvlan"
tagged 48
exit
vlan 100
name "Mktg"
untagged 48
exit

Of course, the vlans would have to have other ports to be able to forward the traffic to the rest of the network.

Regards,
Ralph

hey ralpheb, thanks for the tip, i went into the phone's manuals and found out that the phone automatically tags voice packets. So followed your tip and created 2 vlans, where voice vlan is tagged in all its ports and data vlan is untagged in all its ports and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks again
