Most of our sites are larger and use PRI's or SIP.

One small site with a couple analog phones lines.

9608 Phones.

Callers hear an echo for the first few seconds of the call.

And there is a hum in the background throughout the call.

I am planning on trying to make some adjustments when I go to the site in the morning.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

first, I would make a call using a test set from the DEMARC...

turn all Automatic Gain Control (AGC) OFF on the phones and make sure the impedance on the lines is set to automatic

And perfection may be out of reach, IP phones and analogue lines very often don't work well together :)

AGC has been the worst culprit for me in the past and I am with gknight1 on that one turn it off.

You can also play around with the VCM settings in the System but you may make it worse until you find a settings that is best for you.

There is Echo Return loss that you can adjust (the higher the number the more it adjusts)
Nonlinear Processor Mode you can adjust and so on and so on.

Read the help file even though it is not the best help file portion it will help a bit.

Thanks for the input. The GM for the site asked me top hold off till Monday.

On the AGC I believe you are referring to the AGC on the handsets themselves under Options & Settings, Advanced Settings, Automatic Gain Control?

I remember we had major issues with that feature a few years ago at one of our sites with a couple hundred 9600s and went to each phone and disabled it.

Luckily this site only has a few phones.

This is my least favorite kind of troubleshooting - turn knobs and press buttons and hope to find the right combination that works.

Thanks for the input!

You can control the AGC settings via the 46xxsettings.txt file, and not have to touch the phones.

I have been troubleshooting this for two days and like a rookie never went to the demarc to check the service coming from the carrier.

I took a DS8 card and a digital phone to the site this morning assuming using digital phones would resolve the issue. The problem was actually worse on the digital phone than on the IP Phone.

I went to the demarc and pulled the jumpers. With the jumpers pulled the hum is louder on a call with my butt-set than it is on the IPO. The IPO was actually cleaning up the noise to a large degree.

We called the carrier, and they said there is definitely an issue with the service.

I am annoyed with myself for not following basic troubleshooting steps. After two decades of doing this work I should know better!

so the first(which happen to be mine) suggestion on this whole thread you didn't try??? don't ask for advice if you aren't going to take it...

Yeh, Yeh. I hear you. It was a stupid mistake.

I have beat myself up enough already.

I did follow your advice on the AGC.

Give me some credit for publically admitting my mistake. I could have just moved on and you never would have known, but I wanted others to have the benefit of knowing the final solution.

Saying not to post anymore because of an oversite might have come off a little stronger than you intended I think.
