Today I had a phone die after a firmware update for whatever reason. Is there something I can do to bring it back to life?

No display? No messages? Can you provide more info?

If the problem is it can't connect back to the network, check to see that the Etherent cable is plugged into the correct jack on the rear of the phone. Earlier fw versions allowed you to plug in the upstream connection to the PC port on the rear of the phone.

Sorry should have been a bit more descriptive.

Phone screen backlight comes up but no display then just sits there.

Yes it is plugged into the network jack.

what type of phone is it? i2002/2004/1120E/1140E phase 1 or 2? etc etc

..and you were attempting to change the firmware from what version to what version??

Maybe you lost PoE when the phone was being upgraded? If that is the case, it could have messed up the BootP code and I don't know of a way to recover the phone boot process. Sounds like you will need to get a replacement.

However, I did have a few 1100 series phones sit blank for an extended time and after a reboot they finally did decide to come online. There was also a DHCP boot issue with some 2000 series phones where they would sit and not hit DHCP.

A last-ditch recovery mechanism:
- configure a TFTP server with appropriate set-specific cfg file (i.e. 1140e.cfg for 1140e) and include the name of the firmware file which you want to upgrade to
- remove power from the IP Phone. Hold down the [up] and [2] key and re-power the phone. When the Msg Waiting LEDs go off, release the two keys.
- you should be seeing a simple non-graphic text menu. If you do not see it, then you are in the wrong menu and need to try the previous step again. It is possible that even this mechanism is damaged so try a [up} and [3] on powerup for the backup to this menu.
- when the correct menu appears, hit the 4 soft keys in sequence from left to right. You may be prompted to enter the normal fixed configuration password.
- step through the prompts until you get to the TFTP address. If not already configured, then set it according to the IP address of your TFTP server. Press softkey 1 (OK) and the IP Phone will access the TFTP server to retrieve the config file and then attempt to download the firmware.

Gwebster -
Thanks for the valuable information as I have added it to an archive. I still have a lot to learn and this is a great place to find answers :D
