can i just plug an ip phone at my house and be connected to the work pbx?

You have to have one of the following configurations

A. At home, you have to have a hardware VPN router and your work would have to support that VPN.

or

B. At Work, you would have to have your internet facing router configured to NAT and allow specific port traffic to your Signaling Server.

ok, so the only real option now on the road, or the easiest at least, is probably the ip2050. what is the license cost for that, any idea?

ip2050 v2.xx costs nothing more than an IP User ISM on your switch.

ip2050 v3.xx requires a license server and additional licensing.

ip2050 v2.xx is the way to go. You will be able to use a VPN client on your puter, connect to office and then use your 2050.

Technically speaking with 2050 v2, you have to purchase one CD per installation ($50) or you are in contravention of the licencing RTU. With the 2050 v3, you can download the software for free but have to purchase one activation licence ($50) for each active user. If you have more people installing than active at any point in time (shift workers, casual teleworkers), the v3 is therefore less espensive.

Both v2 and v3 require the same ISM on the switch.
