Hi Everyone,

Shortly we will be implementing a change for an existing customer the scenario is as follows. As we're relatively new to installing these on Vlans I was hoping you could provided some advice on the implementation as I havent yet installed an IPO on a VLAN so am very green on this aspect.

Customer moving premises (literally accross the road) currently 1g wireless links installed providing connectivity between the old site and the existing site.
Currently installed IP500 V1(5.0 (26) with multiple ds 30 modules x1 vcm32 and x1 VCM64 with SCN enabled to two international sites
existing 24/54 series handsets with voicemail pro.

The initial phase of the move consists of moving 60 of the existing users (current digital extn users) to the new building where they will then use 1608 IP handsets retaining old extn numbering/mailboxes etc.(regards IP handsets relevant files copied to the root directory of the nominated TFTP server VMPRO along with SSON 242 configured within the DHCP (customer supplied) predefined options for 1600 series handsets tested off VLAN and works a treat)

Vlan to be implemented at the new site by a third party for voice and data with a new DHCP range (relevant options to be reconfigured) configured for system and handsets (reserved IP's for IPO and VMPRO)phones to route through core switches back to the existing IPO which is to be assigned an Ip on the VLAN (is there anything specific required by the IPO that may need to be taken into account.

Second stage is the installation of a new IP500 v2/VMPRO at the new premises (6.1)and the migration of remaining users to the new building.

I understand going forward the customer may be using phone manager pro/Soft console Which i'm guessing will mean the IPO will need to have visability on the data side of the VLAN as i can see issues possibly on BLF (is this achieved by configuring the second LAN port to an IP on the data range)? Also what needs to be taken into account regards the SCN is it simply a case of ammending the IP settings on the links at the remote sites to reflect the IP changes at the main office?

Any tips pointers or docs that people know of would be greatefully appreciated many thanks for your time

Try to avoid connecting both your LAN1 & LAN2 ports into the customer network. This can give you all kind of weird issues. The ip office can easily bridge the networks (which you don't want(!))

Either use Lan2 for a dedicated connection (Vlan) to the other IP offices, or save it for future (SIP) use.

Going into the future, you will NOT use phonemanager but have a look at One-X portal. This is a webbased server wich gives you the same options as phonemanager. You will not have a BLF problem if this server is in the voice vlan. (or has a 2nd nic in the voice vlan)

Ask your network partner to make the vlans interroutable.
For this you need a Vlan compatible layer 3 device. This can be a Layer 3 switch or a decent router. Your network partner will know this.

Make sure QoS is implemented. If there are quality issues they will come to you. This is actually we always insist on handling the network ourselves. No matter who does the network, the phone guy will be blamed for it ;)

Thanks for your reply denny i have a conference call tomorrow with the network provider so will run this past him then, the first ones are always the most interesting, as this is our first time installing an ipo on a vlan

The IPO will not route traffic between VLAN's unless you make it and then it needs to be assigned as the default gateway for devices before it happens, I do it often with no issue, LAN1 for voice and LAN2 for data :)

@amriddle,

Theoretically you are correct. However i've experienced several issues with this setup involving
Vm ware and hp network gear.

It should work, but as a rule of thumb I try to avoid it.

In my experience, it's a spantree disaster waiting to happen...

Most VMWare enviroments you can configure VLAN's on virtual VMWare switches, I only had some problems with Binding network cards with multiple vlan's
