We currently have a Avaya,(Nortel), CS1000. We are looking to replace with the Avaya IP Office. I have a couple general questions that I would appreciate comments. They are offering to include for no charge J-129 phones per each IP license. We are looking to use this type of set for house phones and our faculty. The 100MB data port should be fine for the majority of these users. They will have voice mail that forwards as an MP3 file to their email. They use the actual phone very little for actual calling.

Other users will receive 9608 IP phones. Our vendor can only provide us 9608 global 100MB /1000MB phones. We will be using the 1000 MB phones for some users but once again a large percentage of our users will only require 100MB data ports. Many of them have a second data port and wireless is available to all our users. Our vendor is saying they are not sure how long the 100MB 9608 will be supported so we should go with the 1000MB phone. There is quite a difference in pricing between the phones. I asked other than the data port, what is different about the 9608 100MB and 1000MB phone. Lots of phones become manufacture discontinued but work just fine. I have CS1000 2000 vintage sets that are still working after 10 years that lost support years ago. Does anyone see any major problems with the 9608 100MB over the next 3-5 years?

We will have about 200 analog extensions for house phones and various dialers. I am aware they will be provided via analog 30 port modules with RJ11 ports that will need to be connected to our copper cables. Does anyone know if there is a pre-made cable available for these modules with connectors on one end to copper ends. Our intention to terminate from the modules to terminal blocks for conversion to the 66 and BIX blocks. Are do we need to make our own cables?

Just from limited experience on this sort of set up.

J129 features are quite basic so check the manual, but this may be OK for your needs.

I always prefer a separate data port rather than connecting through a phone.

The analogue modules have RJ45 ports but only two pins are used. You could just cut up standard patch leads but the flexible cores in this may not punch down easily.

They have just about anything an installer may want (and some that you won't) - but it sounds like you are the end user - surely the install is something your BP should be taking care of...

And What VM? - the Avaya Voice Mail offers don't send messages as mp3
